During the first few weeks of school, there is a sudden increase in lice infestations. This occurs for two main reasons; the influx of children and the summer climate.
After Christmas holiday’s children are excited to get back to school and play with their friends. They run around, play outside and hug each other repeatedly. This increases the risk of lice infestations.
Influx of children
Lice infestations mainly affect pre-primary and primary school children, as they tend to have more head-to-head contact,
and play more closely than older kids. This high level of head-to-head contact increases lice transmission and the prevalence of infestations.
Climate
Lice infestations can occur throughout the year but are extremely prevalent during summer. Lice prefer the humid climate to the winter cold weather. They live in the moist, damp areas of the hair, like the area behind the ears and/or neck. During summer we are more likely to sweat in these areas, making these areas the perfect habitat for lice.
In order to protect your children from infestations this January we have provided some helpful tips:
Instruct your children to avoid sharing hats, scarves, pillows, hair brushes, helmets, or any item of clothing that could possibly transfer lice.
Check your child’s head for lice on a weekly basis. Look in the crown of the hair, behind the ears and the nape of the neck. Especially after spending time with friends or sleepovers.
For young girls, tie their hair in a bun or braid. This prevents hair from dangling and potentially coming into contact with other children’s hair.
When checking for a lice infestation, it is easier to check wet hair. It is important to check the hair clump by clump. This will ensure that no lice remain hidden.
Use a daily prevention spray to repel lice and prevent future lice infestations.
