Plaque Psoriasis
Plaque psoriasis is a chronic condition where the skin cells hyper proliferate (over-produce) due to an overreaction of the immune system. It affects around 2-3% of the population and normally presents in individuals between the ages of 11 and 25. Psoriasis is mainly caused by genetic factors, but there is a link between environmental and emotional factors and flare ups.
In normal skin, skin production occurs every 28-30 days, but in psoriasis, skin regeneration occurs every 7-8 days. This hyperproliferation causes a build-up of skin cells called plaques or scales. The skin becomes red, dry and inflamed, and is extremely itchy. Patients mainly develop the symptoms on their elbows, knees, face, palms and back. In many cases these patients also develop scalp psoriasis.
Due to the build-up of skin cells, the skin barrier becomes damaged, making it vulnerable to external antigens (bugs). This increases the risk of psoriasis flare-ups as the skin is not able to repair itself.
Psoriasis symptoms range in severity from barely noticeable, to outbreaks that cover most of the body. Psoriasis is a non-curable, chronic condition and needs to be treated daily.
Treatment for Psoriasis should target the following three areas:
-
The inflammation:
-
The scaling:
-
The damaged skin barrier
Doctors often prescribe corticosteriods or immune modulators during severe psoriasis flare-ups. These products reduce the inflammation and scaling but are not safe for long term use. Patients then have to use a separate emollients or barrier repair cream to restore the skin barrier and moisturise the skin.
Previously patients had no long term solution to target the inflammation and scaling while restoring the skin barrier.
INTRODUCING DERMALEX PSORIASIS.
